Project Description:

Bartlett Nuclear, Inc. (BNI) was selected as a prime contractor to support the decommissioning of Fermi 1, providing staff for license termination including health physics coverage, characterization, DCGL development, License Termination Plan (LTP) development and radioactive waste management. Work scope including project management, dismantlement, disposal, decontamination, characterization and technical support for the project.

BNI Support included the following work evolutions:

  • Calibration of all portable radiation detection instrumentation in support of characterization and final status survey activities
  • Development of the Derived Concentration Guideline Limits (DCGLs) for 25 radionuclides of concern following the resident farmer scenario for open land area soils and the building occupancy scenario for impacted buildings
  • Simultaneous completion of Fermi’s Historical Site Assessment (HSA), Site Characterization (SC) and LTPs.
  • Development of numerous procedures and technical basis documentation in support of final site disposition
  • Provided support for all related stakeholder concerns and questions resolution

BNI provided a total of 573 personnel who worked 707,267 safe person-hours under this contract.

Results & Achievements:

  • Successful performance has resulted in continuing contract evolutions
  • Zero NRC requests for additional information issued to date (to submitted HAS, SC and LTP)
  • Project completed with zero safety incidents
