| Project Description: Bartlett Nuclear, Inc. (BNI) provided a comprehensive package of radiological services, including ALARA professionals and radiation protection personnel, to support the planning and execution of Angra’s Steam Generator Replacement Project during the utility’s planned refueling outage. The project was executed utilizing BNI’s logistical expertise and cadre of multicultural staff consisting of 4 ALARA professionals and 68 radiation protection personnel (both supervisory and technical). (BNI) provided a comprehensive package of radiological services, including ALARA professionals and radiation protection personnel, to support the planning and execution of Angra’s Steam Generator Replacement Project during the utility’s planned refueling outage. The project was executed utilizing BNI’s logistical expertise and cadre of multicultural staff consisting of 4 ALARA professionals and 68 radiation protection personnel (both supervisory and technical). BNI Support included: - ALARA & radiation protection reviews of outage work scope, work packages, work planning processes and outage schedules
- RWP development and risk analysis and planning, including orientation and training of contract craft workers (both in classroom and simulated/mockup facilities)
- Provided equipment, dosimetry and supervision & job coverage
- Planning & oversight of work evolutions, ensuring minimal radiological exposure, waste and contamination throughout the steam generator removal, transport & replacement
- Supported the utility Auxiliary Building, Fuel Building, RCB Refuel Floor and Reactor Cavity
- Coordinated utility/client relations (i.e., interpreting site culture) for recognized seamless contract control and interaction
Results & Achievements:
BNI provided a total of 72 ALARA & radiological personnel who worked 129,600 safe person-hours under this contract. | - Successfully transitioned and integrated BNI’s workforce into the utility’s permanent workforce
- Completion of the steam generator replacement was accomplished under BNI-administered radiological planning & guidelines, resulting in overall radioactive exposure, contamination and waste considerably less than projected
- Project completed with zero safety incidents
- The project received the Distinguished Paper Award at the 2010 ISOE International ALARA Symposium for its valuable contribution to ALARA principles and operations as determined by hosts IAEA, ISOE and AEN-NEA.
