Outage-Based Scaffold Management Program

Project Description:

Bartlett Nuclear, Inc. (BNI) provided a comprehensive program for scaffolding design, supply and deployment in support of Susquehanna’s spring 2010 refueling outage. Project work scope included the implementation of a maintenance support services and reduction program including planning, scheduling, supplying, erecting, modifying and final removal of approximately 625 scaffold towers.

BNI Support included:

  • Utilization of a uniquely-developed closed shop (union-based) craft workforce in a timely and cost-effective manner to plan, work and complete all scheduled tasks (i.e., scaffold revolutions and general labor support)
  • Provided all required qualified Senior Project Management who were experienced with PPL corporate and site-specific operations, work procedures and guidelines
  • Provided requisite on-site scaffold training to both station personnel and contract craft personnel in liaison with the Local Union Hall

Results & Achievements:

BNI provided a total of 192 managerial & technical personnel who worked 75,553 safe person-hours under this contract.

  • Use of proprietary, state-of-the-art Excel scaffold material resulted in significant mitigation of radiation exposure and man-rem in accordance with ALARA principles
  • Achieved overall reduction in radiation dose associated with scaffold work evolutions as compared to the previous scaffold project performed for Susquehanna’s 2009 refueling outage
  • Recognized for promotion and application of safe and efficient practices throughout the five-month duration of the project
